What is Compounding?

Compounding involves a licensed pharmacist creating a specific pharmaceutical formulation to address the unique medical requirements of an individual patient (either human or animal), especially when existing commercial drugs do not suffice. This may be necessary when a patient cannot tolerate a standard drug, the required formulation is not on the market, or the drug is in shortage or has been discontinued.

Here are several ways in which a compounding pharmacist can tailor medications according to a doctor’s prescription to suit the needs of a patient:

  • Adjust the strength or dosage.
  • Add flavor to the medicine to improve its taste for children or pets.
  • Modify the drug to remove non-essential ingredients like lactose, gluten, or dyes that may cause allergic reactions.
  • Alter the form of the medication to assist patients who have trouble swallowing or who experience stomach upset from oral medications.

Compounding pharmacists are able to incorporate medications into various forms such as flavored liquids, creams, gels for skin application, suppositories, and other tailored dosages. Importantly, compounding does not involve replicating commercially available drugs, which is legally prohibited.
